Coventry City Ladies suffered a narrow 2-0 defeat today at the hands of 2011 FA Cup Winner's Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at Sphinx Drive writes Serena Martin.

Arsenal coach and former City star Laura Harvey fielded a strong side for the meeting and the hosts had goalkeeper Sarah Morgan to thank early on after producing two smart saves to deny Arsenal the lead.

The visitors continued to press for an opener and kept possession well during the first half, giving players Jayne Ludlow and Danielle Carter several opportunities for scoring but the scores remained level at half-time.

Sue Wood replaced Sarah Morgan after the interval but was helpless to keep out Carter in the 55th minute who headed home a right-footed cross.

And Arsenal put the result beyond doubt when Ludlow powerfully headed home from twenty yards out.

Two great interceptions late on denied the visitors a third as Coventry were able to walk away from Sphinx Drive with their heads held high after a respectable 2-0 defeat.

After the match, Arsenal City Ladies' Manager Harvey was pleased with the win.

She said: "It was a good work out today as well as being a hard competition for both teams. It wasn't an easy win, Coventry City Ladies put on a very strong performance, but I'm pleased with the result all the same."

"After a break in the Women's Super league competition, it will be great to get back in the game next weekend."

When asked what she thought about England's performance in the World Cup she added: "I'm disappointed we went out when we did, however there was a lot of good young talent and I can't wait to see them improve over future games"
