Barnet Ladies 3-0 Coventry City Ladies

Women's Premier League North Division

COVENTRY City Ladies head coach Paul Cudby has refused to blame his side after they suffered their second defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon.

The Sky Blues found themselves 3-0 down at the interval and despite a brave second-half fight back, the damage had already been done.

Cudby's side now sit third in the Premier League National Division, two points behind new leaders Sunderland, but he feels it was just a bad day at the office.

"We were very poor in the first-half," Cudby admitted. "We managed to pick up in the second but there are a few fundamental things we need to work on in training this week.

"I think we need to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.

"As much as the result was disappointing, we're not a bad team over night but we must put it right during training and next week against Nottingham Forest.

"They're a good side. It will be tough test and we will need to be at nothing less than our best to get a result."

Barnet struck three first-half goals to effectively put Sunday's match at Hanwell Town beyond doubt at the half-way stage.

Vicky Boardman headed the Bees into a 25th-minute lead and Alex Keown doubled the hosts' advantage with a header from a corner four minutes later.

The Sky Blues were struggling to find a foothold in the match and found themselves three goals down when Stacey Sowden scored shortly before the interval.

It was very nearly 4-0 at the start of the second half but Cheryl Williams' shot was parried by Sue Wood and cleared off the line by Natasha Lynch.

The closest Cudby's side came to scoring a consolation goal was through Helen Dermody but she could only watch in agony as her stunning 25-yard effort was expertly tipped over the bar by Cherie Rowlands in the Barnet goal.

Coventry now have have two home games on the bounce against Nottingham Forest this Sunday (October 16) and Reading the following week.

Team: Wood, Steele (Wilcox 64), Ward, Simpkins, Lynch, Butler, Formaston (Durrant 46), Barber (Torkildsen 46), Gauntlett, Sweetman-Kirk, Dermody.
