Under 16s COE Match Reports 2006/07 Coventry City Ladies 3 - 6 Coventry City Ringers Ringers have 2 players sent off but still claim easy victory !!! The under 16s run of victories came to an abrupt ending when they decided to take on the mighty Ringers in front of a huge crowd at Tile Hill Wood school ( well 1 dog , a tramp and a slug) Admittedly some of the 16s players were unavailable.. Deli, Emmo Wispa Terri and Mozza were either scared off or faking injury. Mozza was entrusted with the job of refereeing the game, a decision that was to prove costly for joint manager GEORGE and Peter Perfect Sidwell, later on in the day. The Ringers who all claim to be parents of the players ( why would u claim that ????) comprised of Daz GK , Kazza, Lenny, Jose, Claire (Stevo’s mummy) Ed the Ledge, Paul Siddo, Pete Siddo, Dan the man, Lewis (found him in the hedge when we got there so y not) Andy Lea , John the Gass and son Adam Pete the Post and Donny Osmond look a like Craig Formaston The 16s had signed up ALLY , MIDGE and LEFTY from the ladies. The girls started very brightly and old Daz was twitching alarmingly and was being kept far too busy for his liking. Up front Lenny didn’t move from his spot as is his custom whilst Donny was still doing his hair and make up. Postie Pete was running his usual groove down the centre of the pitch which covers an area of approx 2 yards wide and 20 yards in length. Old Betty Boo was very lively for the ladies and strike partner 2yards Lozza came close to opening the scoring when both Ed and Kaz waited for each other to make a challenge ( next time send Loz an invite why don’t you) a magnificent thunderbolt strike was heading for the top corner UNTIL ( WAIT FOR THIS its worth it) Daz flung himself acrobatically from one side of the goal to the other( he had been holding Donny’s mirror at the time) and somehow managed to tip the ball over the bar do a triple somersault with tuck and land on his feet and all within the blink of an eye. ( just a bread and butter save really). Some cruel centre forward claimed that he would have caught the ball and set up a counter attack. With the Ringers yet to threaten getting out of their own half the ladies sent on assistant manager Formo, who promptly gave them the lead when she followed up from Lozzas shot to tap home. OK OK perhaps the keeper may have done better form the shot but it did hit a nasty divot before ricocheting off his knee and straight into formo’s path and Clair was giving him a manicure at the time of the shot so using the hands was not an option. Naturally the Ringers rallied round old Daz with words of comfort such as your useless and get off Teflon ( how short some memories can be ! ) Any way the oldies finally managed to cross the halfway line and drew level when Peter Perfect jinked his way past most of the girls (who no doubt were too busy fluttering their eyelashes at him ) before placing his shot to Midges right and into the net. Most of the girls offered hugs and congratulatory kisses to him as did several of the Ringers (well Donny anyway). Just before half time and the Ringers received a terrible blow, when Donny went down as though he had been shot and after 5 minutes of girlie screaming we thought we had better take a look. We hear that his 4 sectioned quad is now in 6 pieces OUCH and just as he was making an impact on the game. Into the second half and to be fair the Ringers took total control of the game, Johnny Gassor is claiming a hat trick and we got 2 more as well to give us a 6v1 lead . Daz had been booked for wearing pink socks or dissent or something and Pete Perfect for looking too smooth. At this point the oldies went without a keeper and allowed the girls to field 13 players They managed to claw a couple of goals back before for some reason the Ref lost total control of her senses and sent off old Daz for allegedly swearing at her, in his defence he claimed that Mozza had never listened to a word he has said to her over the previous 4 years so why start now, at this point she growled , gave him a look and he walked . Asking her daddy if what I had said was a sending off offence Leo replied MY KATY WOULD NEVER CHEAT so I sat down and sulked Moments later and Perfect was sitting next to me for I believe waxing his legs and distracting the girls from the game (unbelievable Moran) Lenny had dropped back into defence and was filling the goal admirably and so the game ended with the Ringers down to 9 players but easy winners. Clair was nominated as star player for various reasons mainly for being the only player to pass to Daz during the entire time he was on the pitch. Thanks to everyone who took part and see you all at Pressie Night. Coventry City Ladies 2 - 1 Birmingham City Tile Hill Wood School has been the stage for some wonderful girls and ladies football matches in recent years including the 3v3 cup semi final against Blues which took 26 penalties to decide the winners in the season that all 3 age groups went on to become cup champions. The following season the under 14’s scored the golden goal winner against Derby County with the last kick off the game which once again put them through to the final. The following year the untouchable Leicester City 14’s just managed to scrape a 1v1 draw with a minute to go when Jose’s girls played out of their skins.
Many of those same girls lined up for this top of the table clash against the unbeaten girls from Birmingham and what a performance they produced to finish the season off in style and complete their fixtures as league leaders with Blues set to face Leicester in the final game to be played later this month. With so much at stake and Blues just needing a point to clinch the title it was obvious that this was going to be a very competitive match and the 1st thirty minutes would probably be the most important of the whole game. Both teams are capable of playing some very attractive football but the right to do so has to be earned 1st and on the whistle for the start both sets of players looked and sounded very much ready for the job in hand. The Sky Blues have a reputation for being slow starters but not today and both teams set about gaining the upper hand. The 1st 20 minutes was fairly even with the Sky Blues possibly just edging the possession but Blues came closest to scoring 1st when the ever dangerous Lowe saw her effort hit the bar and fall to safety. 2 minutes later and it was Coventry’s turn to go close when following good work down the right by Formo her cross found Emmo who turned her defender with a quick turn before putting her left foot shot just over the bar. So after 30 minutes honours were just about even as was the score line. Into the 2nd period and the Sky Blues appeared to be unlucky when Emmo was upended in the box only for the Ref to wave play on. Emmo had been in great form in recent weeks and today was no exception , holding the ball up well , bringing team-mates into play and always looking dangerous. Formo was next to just miss the target following a quick free kick from Mozza she fired just wide and the chance was gone, but Coventry were playing at a quick tempo and thinking quickly as well which was pleasing to see. Charli and Siddo were having very big games at full back and Oggy was looking very classy in everything she did , whilst Gobby was keeping it beautifully simple and looking good. The Doink twins were having the best of centre midfield whilst formo and brad were being creative out wide. Brad came off for a rest and Kippa went to left mid. On 50 minutes the Sky Blues took a deserved lead when from a pre planned corner move Oggy decided to change the plan and feed it back to Formo , her cross was floated over the blues defence just as Stevo arrived and her header easily beat the keeper. So well done Oggy for totally ignoring your instructions as usual haha. Blues had a couple of chances go wide themselves including a goal line clearance by Oggy , before Emmo delivered a super cross come shot that only just missed the far post with the keeper well beaten Just before the whistle Captain fantastic Mozza hit a sweet volley from 25 yards that again just curled wide of the post. So into the final 30 minutes of the season for the girls in Sky Blue , sitting back and defending was never going to be an option . Loz who had worked tirelessly for her team made way for Betty Boo and she continued her great recent form by running her socks off and hassling the blues defence at every opportunity. Formo attempted a spectacular left foot volley form the left edge of the box but unfortunately the ball sliced away for a goal kick. This was a wonderfully physical but not dirty game and some very brave challenges were leading to some nasty grazed legs off the hard pitch. With Coventry still pushing forward Blues got back into the game by scoring on the counter attack which was very unlucky on the back four who had been superb. Blues were naturally very pleased as a point was all they needed , however City didn’t give up and on 75 minutes Mozza got on the ball outside the box and headed towards goal. 2 attempted tackles clipped her heels but she carried on with the run until the third clip finally sent her tumbling and the ref had little option but to award the penalty kick. Some unhappy and unpleasant comments from frustrated fans meant that Mozza was kept waiting for a nerve wracking 3 or 4 minutes, whilst the ref calmed them down. Despite the delay she somehow managed to hold her nerve and slot the ball home despite a good effort from the keeper. The last 15 minutes passed fairly comfortably for the Sky Blues who were now in control of the game and were never going to let the lead slip again A recent back injury meant that Jess was given only a couple of minutes but even she was able to savour the moment as the final whistle was blown to give the Coventry girls a great win and their seventh on the bounce. Naturally the Sky Blues celebrated the win as though it were a cup final victory and one or two tears were seen to trickle down the cheeks of some so called hard nuts. As for the Coventry girls, I think that I can safely say that they have ALL done their parents, their club, coaches and above all THEMSELVES very proud indeed. A very special mention for Wispa who has missed the last 4 games through injury. Oggy was magnificent in defence today and Emmo lead the line superbly but for me our inspirational captain Mozza proved once again what a fantastic leader and player she is and I dedicate this victory to her as I know just how much it meant. Presentation Night promises to be a night to remember but you do need to book early for a dance with either Neil or myself as the shandy does affect us more quickly as we get older. Captains Report Things were looking bright for the Sky Blue girls as they went into their last game of the season with 6 games unbeaten and going for the 7th straight win. We knew the game against the Blues was going to be a battle, because of the last result of 3-0 back in September. Starting the game, the girls knew what they had to do, win the battle in the first 30 and earn the right to play. both teams started frantically, but the Sky Blues settled the better and started to get a grip on the game. Gobby and Oggy were keeping the strikers quiet upfront and stevo and moz controlling the centre, doinking it at every chance. The forwards emmo and loz, were making the Birmingham City's defenders panic on the ball, with their hard work and honesty. Sky blues ended the first 30 brightly looking in control. The 2nd 30 started off how it ended, each player putting everything in. blues were trying to hit their forwards early with the long ball. but defenders charli and siddo were working hard to nullify the blues on the flanks. blues then tried it straight down the middle but oggy and gobby stood firm. Blues got on top for 10 minutes and created a few chances but couldn't convert. This was city's warning, they knew they had to step it up. It was only a matter of time until the Sky Blues got what they deserved, emmo was working her magic with her trickery which caused mayhem for the blues defenders. Blues then conceded a corner. after working on set plays at training. Neil, daz and kaz hoped one would eventually pay off. however this wasn't the case, there was confusion with what was happening. Oggy committed the crime of controlling it instead of letting it run past, she then passed it back to formo who crossed it into POMO area, it sailed over mozza's head and stevo doinked it into the back of the net with her head. All was forgiven about the corner, 1-0!! the girls ended the second 30 with a 1-0 lead. Sky Blues were only 30 minutes away from beating the unbeaten blues. The last 3rd started with a toss up, straight 30 instead of the two 15's. It was tense, nobody wanted to make a mistake. chances went begging for both teams, and it was blues who capitalised. Sky Blues were caught on the wrong side leaving delhi stranded. 1-1. Girls heads dropped slightly, mozza was urging them to lift their heads, keep battling, its not over yet. With about 15 minutes to go, Sky Blues were having more possession, a goal was close by. Everyone was working together as a team to help keep the pressure on. The ball fell to mozza, she entered the 18 yard box, she took on the 1st player who had a bite, 2nd player did the same, the 3rd made too much contact which meant mozza was bought down. PENALTY. After a minute break due to crowd disturbance from blues parents, the ref then had to find the penalty spot. It was nowhere to be seen, so he counted the yards. The ball was placed on the spot, Mozza doinked it into the bottom right corner(with help of the keeper) 2-1!!! After that, time seemed to be going rather slow. Sky blues dug in and were well in control. With 5 minutes to go Stevo took a whack in the face from Emmos clearance, Weston was called into action to see what the damage was. Stevo returned to the field with a split lip carrying on where she left off. the long awaited whistle was blown. Sky blues had beaten the unbeatable blues. Cheers and hugs were given all round. 7 out of 7 what an achievement! A big thank you to parents for their continued support throughout the season. Many thanks to the ladies who turned up to support, it was appreciated. Neil Daz and Kaz’s Sky Blue army ended the season on a massive high. Coventry City Ladies 2 - 1 Leicester City With the match being switched to Harborough Leisure Centre the Sky Blues travelled hoping to continue their excellent run of form which has seen them win their last 5 games having been set the challenge of a 7 game mini season at the beginning of March. Since then they have accounted for Kidderminster, Leicester, Shrewsbury, Stoke and Derby as well as lifting the Easter Cup in Holland. The management team were quick to point out that todays game would be much more competitive than the last time the sides met and so it proved to be.
The Sky Blues made a dream start when from the kick off Loz won the ball and ran into the corner before squaring to Mozza in the box, she shrugged off her marker before side footing to Emmo who tapped the ball into the net to give City a 24 second lead . As very often happens this early goal didn’t lead to the scoring team carrying on in the same fashion and whilst Coventry probably edged the 1st 15 minutes , Leicester came back very well and as predicted were much more determined and competitive for this match and they gave as good as they got in all areas of the pitch. The play was scrappy at times with some erratic decision making causing some unnecessary panic in the Coventry defence when a simple lifted ball was all that was required. Over playing in the wrong areas was also paramount and neither team were able to take control of the game Again the 2nd period was played at a frantic pace with some good moments of individual skill but no real cohesion. However from the kick off Emmo found Formo with an excellent pass and her effort just skimmed the cross bar. Leicester enjoyed plenty of possession and only an excellent push over from Deli kept the Sky Blues noses in front. As ever Formo was lively but down the left Leicester worked well and stifled her as much as possible. Stevo had had a subdued first 30 minutes but was now beginning to get into the game more and was teaming up with Moz well. At the back Charli was enjoying yet another excellent game with some crunching tackles and using her much improved left foot on a regular basis. Despite the high tempo from both sides there were very few chances created and the score remained at 1v0 to City after 60 minutes Into the final period and City finally extended their lead when from a free kick out on the right, Oggy delivered a great ball into the box , Stevo just failed to make contact but Formo followed in behind her to slot home her 26th goal of the season and give the Sky Blues a bit of breathing space. This however was very short lived as 2 minutes later a Leicester free kick was floated into the box and the Leicester player was allowed to run thro and score past the helpless Deli. Naturally this set up a tense last 15 minutes but to be fair the Sky Blues enjoyed most of the possession during this time and were once again able to collect all 3 points. A competitive if scrappy game at times but some good football played as well. Well done to Leicester and thanks for arranging the facilities at short notice. 6 wins from 6 for the girls which sets up next weeks big clash with league leaders Birmingham who remain unbeaten for the season and this promises to be a super game to finish the season off. Derby County 3 - 4 Coventry City Ladies The Sky Blues travelled to Mackworth College expecting a tough game and got exactly what they expected but emerged as worthy winners and were once again a credit to their travelling supporters and the club.
Kicking down the slope but against the wind City got off to a brisk start with Formo getting straight at the Derby left back and putting the ball just past the far post. Derby however took an early lead when from their keeper the ball was allowed to bounce in midfield and the Rams tall and fast striker managed to get ahead of Gobby and lift the ball over the advancing Deli. So a setback but the Sky Blues went on to dominate the rest of the 1st 30 minutes with Formo causing havoc down the right and the City team on the receiving end of some lively challenges that went unnoticed by the officials. Several attempts flashed past the far post and a couple of excellent saves kept the Sky Blues out until from another formo delivery the keeper failed to collect cleanly and Emmo nicked the ball and put it into the net for the equaliser. There were cries of foul and on another day a different ref may have agreed but having seen nothing all game he decided to continue in the same way for the remainder of the game. Into the 2nd 30 minutes and for the 5th game on the trot the Sky Blues took total control of the game when firstly Betty showed great pace and strength to get to the ball first and poke it past the advancing keeper to give City a deserved lead. Mozza went close to making it 3 and then following more good work from Betty who won the ball and rolled a nice pass into the path of the oncoming Brad who’s 1st time effort skimmed the inside of the post and past the stranded keeper to give the Sky Blues a 2 goal cushion. Formo and Emmo came off for a rest as Jess and Loz went on Brad went close again this time cutting in from the left and shooting just wide with her right foot and the score after 60 mins was 3 v 1 to Coventry. Siddo came on for Kippa who had enjoyed another solid game in defence and Emmo and Formo were re introduced for Betty and Brad who had both had very good games. From an Emmo corner Formo just missed contact with her head and the ball went to Loz who had positioned herself deep at the back post And from an acute angle she smashed the ball into the net for a superb piece of individual technical skill. At one point Formo nearly had her shirt pulled off her back but again the ref saw nothing and a minute later she received the ball in her own half , turned past 1 player and then jinked her way past 3 more players diving tackles before finally being scythed down just outside the box and still no sign of a yellow card Into the final 15 minutes and Mozza went close again before with only 5 minutes to go a very dubious free kick was awarded for obstruction which I believe results in an indirect free kick. However the ball was brilliantly struck directly into the back of the net to give Derby a life line . With only seconds to go Derby scored again when the Sky Blues failed to clear the ball in the area but as the players made their way back the centre circle the full time whistle sounded. The Coventry girls seemed a little disappointed to concede the late goals but were reassured that under very difficult circumstances they had performed very well and should be very proud of themselves. There were lots of excellent individual performances but on the journey up to Sheffield the management team agreed that Stevo had been outstanding in the middle of the pitch ( so don’t lose that stone m8). Another big game next week at home to Leicester, see you all there and well done Stoke City 1 - 5 Coventry City Ladies Following a successful tour of Holland, it was back to league action for the Sky Blues as they travelled to Roe Lane Playing fields in Stoke. An impressive run of 3 straight wins had given the girls an outside chance of league honours and competition for places was fierce….
The Sky Blues started the match kicking up the slope on the small restrictive pitch and had the better of the early exchanges. Wingers Brad and Formo were urged to hug the touchlines to create as much space as possible. Emmo was putting herself about very well upfront using all of her strength and skill to give the defence a hard time. Coventry took a well deserved lead after 10 minutes when Emmo linked up with Formo and City’s top goal scorer made no mistake from just inside the box to take her tally to 22 for the season. Stoke responded well but the City defence including the impressive Deli were never really tested and the scores remained at 0 v 1 at the end of 30 minutes. The team talk was upbeat but the girls were reminded that playing downhill wouldn’t make the game easier if they relaxed and that the conditions dictated that they should all take a touch before moving the ball but not overplay things on the small pitch. Its fair to say that the girls did exactly as they had been told and totally dominated the 2nd 30 minutes. Emmo again released Formo who placed the ball across the keeper and into the far corner of the net and 5 minutes later a carbon copy goal gave Formo her hat trick and number 24 for the season. Both Jess and Betty had come on at the break and were both doing a great job for the team with Betty enjoying her best performance of the season so far. City’s fourth goal was a real beauty and without doubt the best team goal of the season. From a free kick inside their own half , Mozza rolled the ball to Charli who’s 2nd touch found Betty , her 2nd touch found Emmo and her 2nd touch put Formo through and once again she found the far corner of the net from just inside the box and trust me it was a much better goal than it sounds as Stoke were helpless to do anything about it. Stevo saw a header just clear the cross bar and at the end of 60 minutes the Sky Blues were well in command at 0v4. City increased their lead to 5 when Betty was fed by Emmo (her 5th assist) and she was able to fire home from a sharp angle even though the keeper got something onto the ball ( very well deserved it was too) Jess came close twice and Stevo again just cleared the bar with a header. Gobby Mozza and Formo had all been rested for the last 30 minutes as Brad and Loz came back on. Stoke managed a late consolation goal and then Siddo was forced to leave the field with a back problem and City saw out the last 5 minutes with 10 players. On a tricky pitch in baking hot conditions against a very useful team, this was an excellent performance by the Sky Blues and they head off to Derby next week hoping to continue their good run of form WELL DONE Coventry City Ladies 4 - 0 Shrewsbury Town
The Sky Blues entertained our good friends from the other side of the M54 at Cov Uni and were able to secure a nice win before heading off to Holland where they hope to retain the trophy that they won last Easter. With the match being played on the large 1st team pitch , it took both teams most of the first 30 minutes to adjust to the conditions. In the space of a week the ground has become rock hard and with a strong northerly wind blowing the early stages were very scrappy as both sides looked to gain the upper hand. The Sky Blues probably edged the possession during this time but Shrewsbury probably came closest to scoring. Oggy was introduced at centre back after 20 minutes as Siddo came off for a breather . City had 4 or 5 corners but no clear chances were created from them. Although Oggy blazed one over the bar from 20 yards which brought the opening period to an end. So Coventry had failed to capitalize on the advantage of the wind and so faced a tricky 2nd period . However as in their previous two fixtures, this is when the Sky Blues took control of the game. Oggy was pushed into midfield and Mozza went upfront as Betty came off and Siddo went back on. Oggy tried to repeat her goal she scored at Leicester when taking a free kick from 22 yards , however this time she was off target a she put too much bend on the ball. City finally broke the deadlock when from a superb through ball from Oggy , Formo ( who had easily been City’s best player in the first 30 minutes) out muscled the defenders before sprinting clear and giving the keeper no chance from just inside the box to give her her 20th goal of the season. Another free kick to City around the D, saw Mozza take centre stage and she wasted no time in whipping the ball into the top corner whilst the Shrews were still shuffling their defence , the ref had signalled the kick could be taken and there were no complaints from the visitors so well done Mozza for some quick thinking (any thinking is a bonus let alone quick !!!!). These 2 goals effectively killed the game and when Mozza tricked her way past 2 defenders wide on the left she was able to knock in a low left footed cross which Formo flicked up and over the keeper with the outside of her right foot as she ghosted into the box for yet another quality finish. Shrewsbury as always kept on battling away and playing the game in a great spirit which is a trade mark of the way Tony has always run the team. The 2 technical areas became one on several occasions as some curious refereeing decisions were debated . Into the final period and the Sky Blues were urged to try to keep a clean sheet as Deli who had risen from her sickbed had made 2 or 3 good saves to keep the visitors out during the 1st hour. Daz had been requesting a headed goal from Gobby all season and from a well delivered corner from Brad ( one of many) she shouted her name, rose up high and headed towards the top of the net , where Jess Stone was unable to collect cleanly and the ball had enough momentum to go over the line , much to the delight of the Quite one. Formo and Mozza had already made way for Kippa and the reintroduced Betty. This was Kippas 1st game for several weeks and what a fine 20 minutes she had out on the wing. Showing good body strength and some nice close control on 2 or 3 occasions ( welcome back m8). With 5 minutes left Shrewsbury were awarded a free kick just outside the box and they too tried a quick one as City were getting organized and with the ball heading just inside the near post, from nowhere Deli threw herself across the goal to pull off a superb save to parry the ball around the post and keep her clean sheet intact. Not long after, the whistle went for full time and the Sky Blues had recorded another good win to keep the pressure firmly on Blues and Villa at the top of the table Leicester City 1 - 5 Coventry City Ladies
Following last weeks victory over Kidderminster the Sky Blues under 16s travelled to Leicester University with high hopes of another good TEAM performance against the Foxes On a sunny but very windy day the Sky Blues kicked up the slope in the first 30 minutes and started very brightly indeed , winning challenges all over the pitch and supporting each other at all times however we never seriously threatened the Leicester goal early on and unfortunately , from a very debatable free kick Nat Rae smashed the ball into the goal to give Deli no chance. We didn’t get organised properly ( training on weds girls haha) but it was a superb strike from a quality player and a setback for the Sky Blues which would really test their resolve. Coventry won 2 or 3 corners but weren’t able to provide the finishing touch but eventually got their reward from a free kick of their own. Oggy stepped up and despite the Ref allowing the Leicester wall to stand only 5 yards away Oggy lifted the ball up and over them and into the net with the ball scraping the bar on its way in for a very much deserved equaliser. Despite playing really well our shape wasn’t quite right and so Brad moved to left mid , Formo onto the right and Emmo went upfront and immediately we looked to have a better balance with Brad looking much more comfortable and doing a great job both defensively and pushing on . However neither team added to the score and the first period ended all square at 1v1 With the Sky Blues now kicking down the slope they took total control of the game and Emmo gave us the lead when she nipped in to the box to nick the ball of a hesitant keeper before calmly side footing home. Centre midfielders Mozza and Kate won all the 50/50s and both full backs Siddo and Charli were having absolute stormers , snapping into tackles and laying off passes to wingers Brad and Formo In front of Deli, Gobby and Oggy were unmoveable and also spraying passes around when safe to do so. Formo was seeing lots of the ball and tying the left back up in knots and several dangerous crosses and shots started to rain in on the Leicester goal. Emmo increased the Sky Blue advantage when following good build up play she cut inside both her defender and the box to fire the ball into the near top corner despite the keeper getting her fingers to the ball. Coventry were now rampant and began to force corner after corner. From one the ball fell to Gobby outside the box but her shot just curled wide of the upright. Formo finally got onto the score sheet when from an awkward bounce she was able to control the ball well and despite the efforts of the defender she was able to steer the ball past the advancing keeper The Sky Blues dominance continued when from another corner Loz made a good challenge for the ball which ended up in the back of the net and whilst it may have come off a Leicester player last, we will be notching that one down to old 2 yards who continues to work superbly for the team. Mozza decided to try her luck and her resultant shot turned into an inch perfect pass out to Formo ( sorry Moz couldn’t resist). The whistle sounded for the end of the 2nd period with Coventry ahead 1 v 5 As usual the final 30 minutes would be split into 2 x 15 so as to allow both sides to enjoy the use of any slope or weather advantage. With Leicester kicking down the slope they came at Coventry a little more but wonderful team defending from all the girls kept them at bay and indeed the Sky Blues came very close to increasing their lead when firstly Emmo hit a scorcher form the angle of the box which fizzed just over the bar as the keeper was getting into the ready position and then Loz showed great footwork to beat a defender before rolling her foot over the ball but this time the keeper did brilliantly to prevent the shot. Wispa had come on at right back for Siddo , Jess for Brad and now Betty came on for Loz . Wispa stopped Nat Rae in her tracks on 3 occasions whilst Jess made some nice runs down the left as we entered the final 15 minutes From another corner Gobby rose high to meet the ball but her header was well saved by the keeper Formo had a chance to score with her left but slipped at the vital stage and the ball trickled to the keeper. No more goals were added before the Ref whistled for full time to give Coventry a thoroughly deserved victory. Obviously the management team were delighted with the performance which had seen the entire squad make a huge contribution to a fabulous result. Kazza made special mention of Charli who had been magnificent for the entire 90 minutes . Neil paid the team a huge compliment when saying that it was as good a team performance as he has seen in seven years at the club. Daz just cried (enuff said ) Thanks as ever to the parents for their support and to Kippa for helping with Delis warm up. Coventry City Ladies 8 - 2 Kidderminster
After a six week wait the Sky Blues were finally back in action. In the 3 games that they had played since Christmas the girls hadn’t really performed to their highest standard and toady was earmarked as the start of a new season for them. Mozza was set to return for her first competitive game since the middle of December and with Brad also on the bench Kate Stevens was given the captains armband Coventry started the first period brightly and should really have scored a couple of early goals but the finishing touch was missing and we were beginning to wonder if a repeat of the Wolves performance was unfolding. This feeling was intensified when 3 Sky Blue defenders all closed down the same wide player who was able to deliver a good cross which fell into the empty space for the striker to fire home despite a good effort by Formo to get in the way. On the bright side the players knew where they had gone wrong and will all learn from the moment (fingers crossed). Shortly afterwards Betty had to leave the field having been winded in a collision and Brad came onto the left with Formo switching to her more usual right wing. City drew level when following good work from Loz , Emmo unleashed a left foot bullet from the edge that gave the keeper no chance. It was no more than the Sky Blues deserved and they took the lead 2 minutes later when Formo received the ball on the edge of the box she was forced wide by the defender but with the ball going away to her right she showed superb technique to shoot to the far post for a very high class finish. In the 2nd period Charli was forced to leave the field following a nasty clash of heads and Jess came on at right back with Gobby moving to centre back. City increased their lead when Gobby was fouled in the box following a corner and Oggy made way for Kate to have a go and she made no mistake from the spot. The Sky blues totally dominated this period and Formo notched her second with an identical goal to her first , again striking a ball moving away from goal (very impressive). Loz Graham was having a wonderful game upfront running her socks off, hassling defenders and keeping it all beautifully simple as all good players do. Formo completed her hat trick, when from a corner she headed home unchallenged to make it 5 v 1. Just to prove that there is justice sometimes, Loz christened her new boots when she fired home from just inside the box lifting the ball over several players and past the unsighted keeper. At this stage Mozza was introduced and following a rusty 1st touch soon started to show what an influential player she is. Time on the ball and perfect passing (welcome back) Into the final 30 minutes and once again Formo scored when from a breakaway she ran thro and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper for another very good finish. Kidderminster who carried on battling were rewarded when a well delivered corner was caught by the wind and just eluded an unlucky Deli and crossed the line before being hacked clear. The Harriers pressed for a 3rd but it was the Sky Blues her completed the scoring when Betty who had come back on upfront poked the ball home with the last kick of the game So a promising performance from the girls, things to work on in training but plenty of positives . Quality finishing, good individual defending , good work rate in particular from Loz and ofcourse a shot on target from KATE An excellent buffet again from mummy Moran but NO ham and stuffing once again so things will have to be worked on in the kitchen ahead of the next home game please Sue. Shrewsbury Town 1 - 2 Coventry City Ladies
Following last weeks disappointing performance the Sky Blues bounced back with a much better team effort at Shrewsbury College in an incident packed match. Both sides showed good early determination and there was very little to choose between them in the opening 30 minutes. Coventry were kicking up the slope and against the wind but were very much holding their own and competing for every ball . Kate and Oggy were have a great tussle in centre midfield whilst centre backs Wispa and Gobby were managing to cope with the ever dangerous Kim Bebbington who’s pace and eye for goal are always a threat. Loz and Emmo were combining really well and work very hard upfront and by keeping thongs simple were bringing team mates into play. City took the lead after about 20 minutes when from a corner the ball was cleared to Gobby who was lurking outside the box, she steady herself before lifting the ball over a packed box and into the back of the net. Shrewsbury came at the Sky Blues immediately and having already hit one post their next shot hit the other post but the rebound fell kindly for them this time and the ball was gratefully tucked into the back of the net for a deserved equaliser. Formo managed to beat her defender (who was doing a great job) but just missed on the near post and at the end of the first 30 minutes the scored remained 1-1. With City kicking down and with the wind in their favour we were hopeful of taking the lead but this period was very evenly contested and very few chances created and it wasn’t until the final period when the game became full of twists and turns. After 7 minutes Shrewsbury were awarded a penalty following what appeared to be a very good tackles from both Charli and Gobby. The linesman indicated to the ref that it shouldn’t have been a penalty but the ref has made his decision. Unfortunately the Shrewsbury player had fallen awkwardly and it was feared that she may have broken her leg. After a long wait the medical team arrived and much to every ones relief she finally rose to her feet and went for a precautionary check up at the hospital. The game restarted with the spot kick (rather u than me m8 after so long waiting) and fortunately for the Sky Blues the shot went wide. Five minutes later and Formo went on a run and when entering the area she was clipped from behind and the linesman confirmed to the ref that a penalty should be awarded. Oggy duly stepped up and rifled the ball into the corner of the net to give City the lead. Both teams had further half chances but Coventry managed to hang on to their lead to secure the points. This was a highly entertaining game played in a fabulous spirit as always, many thanks to Tony, keep up the good work mate. Deli was magnificent again and special mention for both Loz and Kate for 2 very determined and gutsy performances. Coventry City Ladies 0 - 3 Wolverhampton Wands Congratulations to a highly motivated and team spirit filled Wolves team who deservedly took all 3 points from the game. The Sky Blues had several chances early on but lacked composure and a killer instinct in front of goal and were made to pay for their mistakes. Some poor decision making and lack of discipline added to a lack of togetherness made for a poor performance overall. Hopefully this will prove to be a temporary hiccup. Well done to Deli who had a superb game between the posts for us. Thanks to 1st team players Lefty and H for your touchline support. And we wish a speedy recovery to Jess Aiesha and Mozza Coventry City Ladies 2 - 0 Stoke City Despite overnight rain, an 8am inspection gave us the thumbs up for the game to go ahead and the four-week wait was over. Stoke started brightly and were soon pressurising the city goal as the Sky Blues struggled to win any decent early possession. However, the defence held firm and after a nervous opening 10 minutes Coventry eventually settled into their stride and began to compete more evenly. Both Brad and Gibbo tried their luck with their weaker foot and although efforts were comfortably saved it proved that training does pay off. Coventry had a couple of corners dealt with fairly easily and neither keeper had been seriously tested during the first 20 minutes. Wispa and Charli were coping well at fullback and centre backs Oggy and Gobby were again showing some nice composure even under pressure. Top scorer Formo was finding it difficult to get into the game for once whilst Mozza and k8 were having a good battle against their opposite centre midfielders. The Sky Blues finally broke the deadlock when from a planned move the ball fell to brad who rifled the ball on the volley over the keeper and into the net to give city the lead after the first period. K8 seemed to be feeling her knee and so made way for Formo in the centre as jess came on at right wing. Coventry had probably just edged the first 30 minutes but stoke upped their work rate in the 2nd period and forced several corners. These were all delivered very well and 2 or 3 headers went just wide of the target. the game was becoming end to end but not through long ball tactics as both teams were playing a passing game even on a heavy pitch, Coventry forced corners of their own but like stoke were unable to convert any of the chances. With 5 minutes of the 2nd period to go Charli made way for Siddo at left back. After 60 minutes city still held a 1 goal lead but stoke were by no means out of the game. Formo reverted to right mid, jess to right back, Wispa to c.back as Oggy was pushed forward to join Mozza. Upfront K8 came back on for brad as city started the final 30 minutes kicking into the sun. Formo now began to make an impact on the game and 3 or 4 runs later she slipped her way into the box but her shot was deflected for a corner. Emmo delivered and Gobby met the ball with her head but the ball whistled past the upright. Five minutes later and Formo again dribbled into the box but this time her shot soared into the far corner of the net to give city the 2nd goal that they needed. again stoke responded well and with 5 minutes remaining they appeared to be certain to score when their striker broke free and sprinted into the box , however gobby gave chase and a superbly timed tackle saved the day and from the corner the ball was once more headed over the bar to safety. Some good football played by both teams on a heavy pitch. Well done to stoke who tried always to play attractively and no doubt will prove to be worthy opponents later in the year. it was great to see Kippa make her return to the side for the last 10 minutes. Old daz gave special mention to oggy who had been superb in both positions. Thanks to mummy mozza again 4 the grub no doubt it will be sprout sarnies next time Kidderminster 0 - 6 Coventry City Ladies
After a very good performance against Derby, the Sky Blues were hoping to keep up the momentum and play some attractive football on their return to Baxter College. However it was the Harriers who started the game stronger and dominated the middle of the pitch early on ( remember Sky Blues you can only play quality football if you have got the ball ) After 10 minutes a through ball caught the City defence in indecisive mood and Kidderminster were unlucky when striker DePaulo saw her shot crash against the bar and away to safety After this piece of good fortune the Sky Blues finally began to get into the game and win some possession , unfortunately the final ball was too direct on several occasions , making it easy for the Harriers keeper to deal with. Against Derby we had created numerous chances from wide play but for some reason City were unable to feed the wide midfielders during the opening 20 minutes. Despite this City were now enjoying most of the possession and when a through ball found Emmo out on the left she controlled the ball before unleashing a shot which the keeper was only able to help into the net. The goal seemed to settle the Sky Blues and now our passing became a little crisper and feet were being found more consistently. The lead was doubled when from a Brad corner Betty was quickest to react and was able to volley the ball home from 8 yards. Into the 2nd period and Coventry began to play some quality football and finally managed to play with some width. Emmo went close twice with long range shots and Betty also sliced one off target. Both Gibbo and Brad were working hard and making good supporting runs even when they weren’t receiving the ball. Formo and Gobby replaced Gibbo and Wispa and shortly after City increased their lead with a super team goal. Gobby, Charli, Brad and Emmo were all involved before Betty out muscled her marker before slotting the ball past the advancing keeper. Emmo added to City’s score with a thunder bolt shot from outside the area that gave the keeper no chance. Formo was beginning to cause havoc down the right and only some very solid defending kept the score line as it was. However the lead was increased when another well delivered corner was met superbly by Formo’s glancing header as she timed her angled run to perfection for a beautiful goal. Five minutes later and from the opposite corner Formo again repeated her move but this time her header drifted just wide of the upright with the keeper only able to watch. The 2nd period had been totally dominated by Coventry who had responded brilliantly to coach Wilson’s interval instructions Loz had come on to replace Emmo and continued her good recent form as she held the ball up to bring others into the game. Betty was asked to try and deliver some rolled link up passes and did this extremely well in the last period of play. City’s 6th goal was another beauty. Gobby stepped over the ball to trick her opponent before finding Siddo out wide , she stepped inside her marker before passing to Formo who’s 1st time pass to Loz was slotted back into her path as she continued her run and from the angle of the box her sweetly struck shot screamed past the keeper who was given absolutely no chance. A wonderful goal . Brad nearly made it 7 but was just unable to get on the end of a Formo cross as she ended up in the net herself and Gobby headed just wide of the target before landing in a mud bath. Kidderminster had an opportunity to open their account when they were correctly awarded a penalty for a trip on their striker. Unfortunately for them the spot kick was pushed wide of the post. Gibbo, Emmo and Wispa all came back on and Gibbo went close on 3 occasions from good through balls but was unlucky on each occasion. The Harriers competed well in the last period but were unable to create any clear cut chances. The final whistle sounded and the Sky Blues had collected a well deserved 3 points Siddo and Charli had performed very well in the full back positions snuffing out absolutely everything and Oggy had another stormer in her new position. Following a jittery 10 minutes and some superb coaching from Neil the girls performed very well, so well done and keep it up. Coventry City Ladies 2 - 1 Derby County
After a 5 week wait the Sky Blues were finally back in league action as they played host to the Rams who had narrowly defeated us in a friendly 4 weeks ago. The girls had played some promising positive football at Shrewsbury last week and were asked to carry on where they had left off and try to take the game to the visitors. Winning the midfield battle would be crucial and Mozza and Kate were proving very much up for the job and in the 1st 30 minute period, wide players Gibbo and Formo were seeing lots of the ball and causing the Derby back line plenty of problems. Formo in particular was causing havoc and slotting in cross after cross down the right but the Sky Blues just weren’t able to get on the end of them to finish off. Two cleverly worked corners resulted in shots on target which were blocked by the defence both times. At the other end Jodie Ward was always lively for the Rams but was being marked superbly by Gobby with Oggy helping out when needed. Once again City were playing football from the back in preference to the long ball over the top game and long may this continue ( yes the girls will make the odd mistake and create a bit of panic occasionally but it is surely worth the risk, so keep it up) Upfront Emmo was always dangerous when on the ball and Loz continued her fantastic work rate and was once again doing everything asked of her by the coaches. Despite all the good football City weren’t able to find the net at the end of 30 minutes. Into the 2nd period and whilst Derby enjoyed a little more possession City were once again the dominant team and deservedly took the lead when Formo controlled the ball just inside the Derby half before going past 3 defenders and side footing the ball for Emmo to slot home. Five minutes later and Emmo turned provider when she delivered a corner for Gibbo to rise above the defence and head the ball over the keepers fingers for a super goal . At the other end Deli had a couple of longish range shots to deal with and did so with ease and was dominating her box to meet any through balls from Derby. Formo had a couple of shots go wide or just over and chances were being created on a regular basis. For the final 30 minutes the play was more even as Derby made a challenge to get back in the game but again City had more opportunities to increase their lead as Aiesha had a shot well saved and the superb Kate Stevens had 2 good efforts drift just wide With 7 minutes remaining Derby were mysteriously awarded a free kick 35 yards out and the very talented Ward fired the ball high over everybody including Deli who could do nothing to prevent the ball going in the net ( a super strike ). Naturally this lifted Derby and they went in search of an equaliser but City kept their nerve and were able to claim a very well deserved 3 points from another entertaining game. Everyone at the club wishes Laura Steadman a speedy recovery from her injury which we hear is ligament damage and not a break. we hope that you will soon be back in action Laura. Kate Stevens was elected girl of the game for a fabulous gritty ball winning performance in the centre of the park which was the catalyst to much of the Coventry’s excellent football . Well done everyone and thanx to Mrs Mozza for the after match grub yummy but where was the HAM AND STUFFING Shrewsbury Town 2 - 3 Coventry City Ladies
The Sky Blues travelled up the M54 for their first match since 7th Oct with regular keeper Deli tucked up in bed with her night nurse and tunes. Brad was duly volunteered by Daz to go in goals ( its ok Brad you don’t have to thank me ) purely on the basis of her diving ability when taking on a defender ( sorry couldn’t resist m8) . Kippa Murphy was also unavailable as she waits to have her knee operation on Tuesday ( we wish you all the best m8 and hope for a positive result). The pitch was a little on the small side but had a good covering of grass and was better than many we have seen. Both managers agreed to revert to 2 x 40 minute halves as it was a friendly fixture. The game started at a brisk pace with both teams pressing to gain the upper hand. Brad made a confident start , when a cross came into the area she raced out to punch the ball to safety and even managed to bow to her adoring fans as she retreated into the 6 yard area. The play was fairly evenly balanced until from a throw in the Sky Blues became drawn across their area and lost their shape and following a bit of a goal mouth scramble the shrews managed to poke the ball home despite the diving efforts of both Brad and Gobby. Fortunately this setback didn’t affect the girls and they started to play some very good football, particularly down the right hand side where Siddo, Formo and Emmo were linking up brilliantly and causing the home defence numerous problems. Indeed from one such move which started from Brad in goals, Formo crossed into the box where Emmo kept her composure to roll the ball to Loz who calmly slotted home from 10 yards. A very well earned goal for Loz who has been working tremendously hard in recent weeks (well done). City created plenty of other goal scoring opportunities but were unable to convert any of them and at half time the scores were tied at 1v1. Oggy had slotted in at centre back for Wispa and both Gibbo and Aiesha were introduced at half time to replace Jess and Formo. City were dominant from the start of the 2nd period and following some good interplay involving 4 or 5 players Aiesha was on hand to stab the ball home from 12 yards , like Loz old Betty Boo has been working hard in training and it was another well earned goal . Oggy seemed to be enjoying herself next to Gobby and was showing good composure on the ball which is always good to see. Gibbo was working hard down the left and following a jinking run she squared the ball to Loz who hit a 1st time stinger which the keeper did very well to tip over the bar. City were playing some good passing football and we then switched to a 3-5-2 formation with Wispa coming back on and Siddo, Emmo and Loz taking a very well earned rest ( all 3 played with great confidence and commitment). Oggy went into midfield with Jess and Formo coming back on down the flanks. Shrewsbury drew level from a quick counter attack and the striker was quickest to react and manage to force the ball home despite Brad doing well to get a hand to the shot. Again the Sky Blues didn’t panic and got their reward when Oggy drove into the box down the right and fired home from an acute angle. To give City a deserved win. The Shrewsbury girls played with great spirit and plenty of skill as ever and played a huge part in a very entertaining game. Many thanks to Tony and Gary for hosting the game and providing the officials and for the complimentary words after the game. From a Coventry point of view it was great to see some of our ‘QUIETER’ players trying their undoubted skills in a match and proving just how good they are well done and keep it up. Birmingham City 3 - 0 Coventry City Ladies This was an uphill struggle from the start for the Sky Blues. A superbly timed tackle by Kate Stevens was penalised and the resulting free kick saw a foul on a city defender , a blues player offside and the ball kicked out of Delis hands all go un noticed by the officials to give Birmingham the lead after a minute. The Coventry girls were immediately chasing the game and never really recovered after this set back but kept the scores the same after 30 minutes In the second period Coventry did play a little better but a sliced defensive clearance was punished and a cross shot went in off the far post to give Blues a 3 v 0 lead. Gobby saw a great header drift just wide and Jess just failed to reach a Formo cross at the far post At some point the City supporters had their day made when being told that decisions could go against Coventry if they voiced their opinions (an unusual statement at any level of football ). Into the final 30 minutes and Coventry enjoyed even more possession, that saw Emmo curl an effort just wide and Aiesha ( Betty ) try her luck twice from range. However it was not to be for Coventry and they ended the day well beaten. Blues were superior and handled the pitch better than we did and took advantage of whatever decisions went their way. The Sky Blues didn’t respond well to the very early setback which although understandable , is something that they will hopefully learn to conquer in the future. Coventry City Ladies 2 - 1 Aston Villa
As anticipated this was a much sterner test for the Sky Blues as local rivals Villa were very up for the contest from the first whistle and were showing greater determination in most areas of the pitch throughout the first period. However City’s leading scorer Formo went very close to giving the Sky Blues the lead when following a run down the left flank she cut inside her defender and unleashed a 25 yard shot to the far post , only to see it fizz inches past the top corner with the keeper stranded. Villa were playing some nice football and had one or two shots from outside the area which Deli handled very soundly each time. City weren’t winning enough ball in the middle of the park and there was too big a gap between strikers and midfield , after 20 minutes Gobby and Emmo came on and the formation was altered to plug the gaps. This had an immediate effect and City started to get into the game for the last 10 minutes of the 1st period . After a lively team talk the girls responded well and had much more of the play in the 2nd period. Loz and Aiesha came on upfront and after 45 minutes Loz gave the Sky Blues the lead when her looping 1st time volley bounced in front of the keeper and over her head and into the net. Not a pretty goal but very valuable and welcome. Good work by Jess who was now at left back sent Gibbo through but she wasn’t able to adjust her body to get maximum power and accuracy behind her shot and the ball went wide of goal. Into the last period and Charli came on at left back and formo came off for a rest . Again possession was shared reasonably evenly with nether team being able to dominate. Gobby and Mozza had long range efforts go wide and Emmo hit a volley from 30 yards that just drifted offline. Deli continued to handle superbly well at all times and was now looking to play out from the back when ever possible. However Villa equalized when Emmo went down injured her team mates decided to switch off and Abi Cottam was allowed to unleash a superb shot into the top corner which gave Deli no chance ( a very high quality finish indeed). The City management decided to go for broke and brought both Formo and Orgy back on as Emmo and Mozza had run themselves ragged for the team and were growing tired. Formo was given the instruction to get on the ball and score the winner Five minutes later she received the ball 45 yards out , beat 2 defenders before unleashing an absolute screamer from 30 yards which NO goalkeeper would have got anywhere near to saving. Two minutes later a superb ball from Gibbo was met with a perfectly timed run and finish by Aiesha as she chipped the ball over the keeper from 20 yards . Unfortunately ( for some reason) the goal was ruled out for offside. Naturally Villa gave there all for the last 5 minutes but City had done enough to gain the points. A typical cut and thrust local derby with both teams having good periods of the game and at times playing some good football Two very high quality goals and some good goalkeeping as well from Deli. City will need to play off the front foot much more as the season progresses but can still be pleased with much of what they have achieved so far. Congratulations to the Villa girls and coaches as they always looked to play football and were a credit to their club as ever WELL DONE. Wolverhampton Wands 1 - 6 Coventry City Ladies
The under 16’s centre of excellence ladies started their league campaign in good style when they took on midland rivals Wolves at Willenhall school. As ever the first 10 minutes would prove crucial and with Captain Mozza and midfield partner Kate Stevens doing what they do best and winning the ball, City were soon into their stride and able to play some decent football. Wingers Oggy and Formo were seeing plenty of the ball early on and the front pairing of Brad and Gibbo were causing the Wolves defence plenty of problems. Indeed a great through ball from Formo set Brad away and she did well to get in a shot that just went wide. At the back Wispa was leading the way and was talking like it was going out of fashion ( well done ) City opened the scoring with a superb goal when Brad found herself marked out on the right and with Oggy in support, she did a lovely trick and turn before chipping the ball into the box where Formo ghosted in behind a defender to head the ball past the keeper into the far corner. The second goal was even better when deep in her own half Oggy set it back to Siddo who drilled a first time pass to Brads feet a first time lay off to Gibbo was rolled back into brads path who drove into the box before firing home from 10 yards ( quality stuff girls). Wolves tried to gain some momentum but never seriously troubled the City's goal. In the 2nd period Wolves did have slightly more possession but goals from Oggy who ran from deep in her own half to finish brilliantly from a Formo cross , Loz who calmly rounded the keeper before slotting home and Gibbo who pounced on a loose ball before turning and finishing from 6 yards gave the Sky Blues a very healthy 5 v 0 lead . In the final 30 minute period tiredness started to show from both teams but Formo notched her 2nd and very nearly claimed her hat trick but a fine save by the Wolves keeper denied her. Wolves kept on fighting and eventually got their reward when a City corner broke down and the ball was cleared up field , a mix up in the City defence ( the first and only time in 90 minutes ) gave the wolves strikers the chance they were looking for and eventually they managed to get the ball past the helpless Deli. The City management were very quick to point out that we will all make mistakes if we try to play quality football . Shortly afterwards the referee blew for full time and the Sky Blues had completed a very promising victory. Some very good football at times which hopefully was appreciated by the watching parents and I can’t remember one bad challenge or sign of dissent from either team. Well done to both teams. Scorers: Formo 2 Brad, Oggy, Loz & Gibbo |
