Coventry City Ladies continued their flying start to the season with a narrow 2-1 victory over derby rivals Copsewood at the Westwood Heath Sports Grounds. Jade Formaston passed a late fitness test to fire City into the lead and Robyn James added the second to continue her fine goal scoring form. The Sky Blues survived a late charge from the visitors to restore their five point lead at the top of the Midland Women’s Combination League.

Formaston opened the scoring with her second goal of the season in the 26th minute of what was proving a bruising encounter. Helen Dermody whipped in an inviting cross from the left flank that Formaston duly dispatched high into the net to give City a deserved lead. James, whose early season form has played a large part in Coventry’s fine start, coolly slotted her effort under the advancing keeper for her fifth goal in six games.

Copsewood pulled a goal back before the break through former City graduate Nicola Foskett who rampaged through the Sky Blues’ back line before tucking the ball into the net and calmly making her way back to the centre circle. The 43rd minute strike hauled the visitors back into the match and gave them a real lift for the second period.

Both sides created some good goal scoring opportunities in a fiercely contested second half that saw players from both sides taken off injured. James came closest to scoring when her 53rd minute strike struck the crossbar but the two sides ultimately cancelled each other out after the break. City now focus on a difficult trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, last year Wolves claimed both league ties ultimately costing the Sky Blues promotion.
