14 May 2008 - Congratulations to the U13 Dev
With one of the teams below them losing last night, the Under 13 Development Squad has secured the runners up spot in their league. Congratulations to all involved. Coach Dave Smith added 'The girls have done really well this year'.

1 May 2008 - Coaching the Coach - The Interview
Coventry City Ladies COE Goalkeeping Coach Richard Seedhouse has just been interviewed about his book, Coaching The Coach by former West Ham and Orient player George Pallecaros, who is now the Director of Coaching at www.soccertutor.com.

Coaching the Coach, which includes photographs of many of our players at the center of excellence peforming the drills and skills, is proving such a popular resource that the book is being advertised via a flyer to all newly qualified FA level 1 coaches in the UK by 1st4sport qualifications as part of their Level 1 welcome pack. Currently approximatley 30,000 people succesfully complete thier 1st4sport qualification each year will.

24 April 2008 - Secret of Sky Blues’ success
2008 could well prove to be a watershed year for the Coventry City Ladies. The Senior Team have created a buzz locally with some electrifying performances most notably during their current winning streak, which now stands at 13 games in the Midland Women’s Combination League. As the team sit top of the table ahead of local rivals Leicester heading into a ‘winner takes all’ battle for promotion this weekend perhaps the more important aspect of success comes from the foundation that the club has built with it’s Centre of Excellence.

Established in 1991 the Centre of Excellence now boasts 80 girls training twice and competing weekly across the Midlands in age groups from Under 10 to Under 16. Having adopted the Football Association’s ‘Player Pathway’ scheme the COE develops players for the highest level and readies them for senior football with the first team squad. Nicole Tinto and Adele Rogers have both made the transition to the first team this year with Emily Hanson, Amy Sidwell, Jade Ogle, Charlotte Gassor & Lauren Staples all graduating into the reserve side.

This season has also seen two COE girls called into their respective England squads, Nikki Miles with the Under 15’s and Jade Formaston called up to the Under 17’s (who have just qualified for the Inaugural World Cup in that age group). Both Miles and Formaston have been with the club since the age of 8. Whilst the versatile Miles remains in the Centre of Excellence, Formaston has already graduated into the first team. Her form is one of the main reasons for City’s success this year, In 24 appearances the speedy right sided midfielder has netted 21 times.

As well as guiding the first team to the verge of promotion Manager Stuart Wilson is also in his second year as the Director of the Centre of Excellence and is very pleased with the progress. “Overall I’m happy but there’s always room for improvement. I feel that the direction of the Centre has changed over the last two years in the way we attract and develop players. We have a coaching syllabus in place that we always look to improve upon with feedback from the coaches. Next year we will be looking to add a more scientific measure to the Centre in order to help the players Improve the physical and psychological aspects of their game”

Wilson is very quick to recognise the important part that the volunteers around him have to play “The coaches do a tremendous job and without the support of the committee, the players and their parents we wouldn’t see the kind of success that we’ve had this year”. Coventry City Ladies finish their season on Sunday when they go in search of a victory that would virtually assure them promotion from the Midland Women’s Combination League. Kick-off is 2pm at the Blaby Scout HQ

22 April 2008 - 1st Team ~ Sun 27th April
This Sunday sees the City Ladies' final games of the season. First the Reserves host 2nd placed Leicester City FCW at Westwood Heath; kick off time to be confirmed. Then the first team travel to Blaby for a title decider against their promotion rivals. With both teams on 53 points, the Sky Blues top the table on goal difference only.

20 April 2008 - All still to play for
Coventry City Ladies got the result they needed today as WBA held on to scrape a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City Women FC (see brief report below). The point brings the Foxes level with the Sky Blues heading into next Sundays title decider. Although Leicester still have a game in hand Coventry's 22 goal advantage would seem likely to be enough to win promotion if they can take all 3 points at the Blaby Scout HQ. Until then...

Match Report: WBA V Leicester City Women
Leicester jumped out to an early lead through Natasha Meade but wasted several chances to finish the contest leaving the door open for the to Baggies equalise. Louise Fellows was rewarded for her efforts in the first half when her lobbed shot was fumbled into the goal by Leicester 'keeper Laura Niblet with what was virtually the last kick of the half. Leicester had a glorious chance to snatch victory at the death but this time Meade fired well wide when one on one with the 'keeper.

10 April 2008 - Coventry Ladies Race Night
The Senior Players are organising a night at the races. The night will consist of 8 video races of which you will be able to place bets and maybe win some money. You will even have the option to buy your own horse!

Tickets go on sale Monday 14th April, available from senior players. Proceeds from the night will go to Coventry City Ladies Football Club. All family members and friends are welcome. For more details, please see Stuart Wilson, COE Director.

The Birmingham County Women's League Open Cup Final has now been rescheduled for Sunday 20th April 2008 with a 10.30am kick off.

As with our previous two U17/U15 tours the 2008 U19 Holland Easter Tour was subsidised through fundraising, sponsorship and raffles.

As a squad it was always a reality that due to the age group not every player would be available to take part in some of the fundraising due to work and university commitments and it was decided that those " who could would " and" those who couldn't" would be equals.

This formed an excellent basis on which to organise another tour and it proved worthwhile in every aspect as reflected in our tour report and photos.

31 March 2008 - Open Age Cup Final
This coming Sunday the Open Age side face Division 2 leaders Kingshurst in the Birmingham County League Open Age Cup Final. After wins over Birmingham Medics (2-1), Redditch Utd (9-0) and Solihull (4-0), the girls have earned the opportunity to collect their first piece of silverware this season.

The game is to take place at Wheelers Lane, Birmingham, and kicks off at 10:30am. The players and some of our supporters will be meeting at 8am on Sunday to board the coach, which will depart from the Jaguar Sports and Social Club in Radford at 8:30am sharp. There will be a convoy of vehicles following us to our destination, anybody wishing to join us will be more than welcome. So if you’re free this weekend please come along and give the girls all your support.

31 March 2008 - 1st Team Match Postponement
The recent inclement weather had a major impact on this weekends fixtures with neither of the promotion chasers able to fulfill their fixtures. Coventry's game at Wolves & Leicester City Women's game at Leafield were both postponed due to waterlogged pitches. WBA managed a good 4-1 win at Loughboro keeping their very slim hopes of catching the front runners alive. We now look forward to next weekends League Cup Semi-Final which pits the top two together as they look for a place in May's Final. Until then...

23 March 2008 - 1st Team End of Season Run-in Update
Coventry City Ladies’ promotion hopes were dented today as the Leicester City Women won 2-1 in blustery conditions at Wolverhampton. While the Sky Blues lay dormant the Foxes made up one of their two games in hand and took full advantage to climb above Coventry into the top spot of the Midland Women’s Combination League.

Leah Rawle opened the scoring for Leicester in the 14th minute, her corner carried on the wind deceiving everyone and curling straight into the net. Sarah Lambeth’s equaliser 3 minutes later was equally as fortunate, her searching centre could have been turned in by any one of four Wolves players but avoided all and nestled in the bottom corner.

The winner came courtesy of Courtney Sweetman-Kirk as she took advantage of a defensive lapse to race clean through and dispatch an assured strike into the bottom corner leaving Wolverhampton keeper Rebecca Thomas no chance. Wolves had chances to pull level in the second half with Nicole Ledgister nicking Anne Johnson’s cross narrowly wide. Laura Niblett also pulled off good saves late on from a couple of Wolves free kicks as their challenge petered out.

Leicester now sit in the drivers seat as they chase their fourth promotion in as many years. The Foxes still have to survive a tough April if they’re to see it through though. Difficult trips to Derby and West Brom await them as well as the possible title decider when they host the Sky Blues on the last day of the season.

19 March 2008 - 1st Team End of Season Run-in
As the Midland Women’s Combination League careers towards a thrilling climax the Coventry City Ladies enjoy a well-earned break from action this Easter. The Sky Blues’ Ladies have put together an impressive streak of 11 straight victories by a margin of 65 goals to just 8 conceded and it’s that kind of form that has propelled them to the top of the League.

The Leicester City Women are enjoying somewhat of a purple patch themselves, having won 13 of their past 14 matches, they sit just one point behind their close neighbours with a 2 game advantage. They make up the first of those games this Sunday as they travel to Wolverhampton for what’s likely to be a stern test of their resolve.

If Leicester were to drop any points then Coventry would hold the keys to their destiny thanks to a vastly superior goal difference. The Sky Blues have a 23 goal advantage largely due to England Under 17 winger Jade Formaston, former Arsenal Lady Danni Saulter & former Birmingham Striker Keeley Lowe. The three have combined for 28 goals over the last 10 games including a 5 goal haul for Formaston away at Hereford Pegasus.

With only one promotion place available, & the prize being a place in next seasons FA Tesco Women’s Premier Northern Division, Sunday April 27th could mark one the clubs most pivotal dates. The final day of the season pits the two title contenders against one another in what will likely be a title decider. The two clubs last met back in Mid-September when they played out a hard fought 1-1 draw, Remi Allen bringing the visitors back from behind after Formaston had given Coventry a half-time lead.

Prior to that epic encounter the two will have a dress rehearsal as they meet in the League Cup Semi-Final on April 6th. Leicester then face gruelling trips to Derby County & West Brom both of whom sit in the top 5 & will test their title credentials to the limit. Coventry’s remaining fixtures see them travel to Wolves & meet TNS at the Westwood Heath Sports Grounds.

The Centre of Excellence are now looking at players for the U10, 12, 14 and 16 squads for next season. If you are interested and believe you have the skill set, aptitude and commitment to train twice a week and play once a week in a non-competitive but high level environment you should come along and join in the training on a Monday at Monday Blue Coat School 3G Astro Turf 18.00-20.00 and Wednesday 6-8pm at Warwick University All Weather pitches car park 13.

8 March 2008 - Girls score dream ticket to the USA
Congraluations must go to two girls from the Development Club. Joanne Ryan and Sanjeet Jaspel have each won a scholarships to play their much-loved sport in America. Both girls have been playing in the Development club and current play in the Open Age Team.

2 March 2008 - Coaching the Coach

“Coaching the Coach” written by our own UEFA B Coach and FA Tutor Richard Seedhouse has been endorsed as a “Fantastic Coaching Resource” and recommended for all Level 1 coaches by The Association of Football Coaches.

The book includes many photographs of our Coventry City Ladies Centre of Excellence players and coaches demonstrating and coaching the various drills and techniques. The Association of Football coaches is unique in It provides opportunities to access the world of the professional game and utilises key professional coaches, players and clubs – for example Lawrie Sanchez, Shay Given and Peter Crouch.

This Sunday's Midland Combination fixture v Alfreton Town will take place at Cryfield Sports Pitches, Warwick University, Gibbet Hill Road, Coventry CV4 7AL. There is parking provision at the Pavilion.

Please note: There is currently no through road from Coventry University at Westwood Heath, due to roadworks. Only access to Cryfield is via A 429 (Kenilworth Road) and Gibbet Hill Road.

21 February 2008 - 1st Team News
In a momentous week that has seen Coventry City Ladies climb above Leicester City Women into first place in the Midland Women’s Combination League the neighbouring rivals have been handed a mouth watering League Cup Semi-Final tie.

The match is scheduled for Sunday the 6th of April at Leicester’s home ground in Blaby and marks the second time the two sides have met. Their first encounter saw Coventry hang on for a point on the back of a fine performance from Kerry Williamson. The Foxes dominated a hard fought match but couldn’t convert their chances as they were thwarted time and again by the in form City keeper.

Coventry’s performances have steadily improved since that September afternoon and confidence will be sky high amongst Stuart Wilson’s squad. The two sides are also scheduled to meet three weeks later on the final day of the season, as Coventry once more travel up the M69. The prize could be far greater as the battle for the lone promotion place looks set to go to the wire. The other semi-final tie will see Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to Derby County.

The Sky Blues must first focus on this weekend’s opponents as they play host to Wolves. The two face-off for the first time since Wolves knocked Coventry out of last seasons F.A. Cup in front of a record crowd at the Ricoh Arena. The match is scheduled for a 2pm kick off at Coventry University Sports Ground on Westwood Heath Road, entry is free.

7 February 2008 - England Debuts For Senior Duo
Congratulations to Helen Dermody and Louise Whitehouse on making their England College debuts against Australia on Sunday 3rd February at Oxford City. It was England Colleges first competitive game together and unfortunately the result did not go their way with the Aussies winning 2-0.

Reports off the sidelines of the many CCLFC spectators reflected that both players left the pitch with their heads held high having turned in performances which could soon lead to further caps.

With more CCLFC players taking part in selection trials we could soon see up to 4 senior players named in future England squads. Once again congratulations and keep it going.

22 January 2008 - 1st Team County Cup Preview
Coventry City Ladies are up against Birmingham City tonight [Tues 22nd Jan] in the 4th Round of the County Cup.

Their National Premiership rivals have held the trophy for the last 7 seasons and have beaten the Sky Blues in each of the last three; although they needed extra time to do so in a thrilling final in 2005.

Stuart Wilson’s side are in good form though, having scored 45 goals and conceded just 4 since the beginning of November.

Strikers Sinead Wade and Keeley Lowe came through the ranks at the Blues and will be looking to put one over on their old club.

The game takes place at the Coventry University Sports Ground on Westwood Heath Road, and kick off is at 19.30.

17 January 2008 - Jon Gaunt

From Talk Sport and The Sun, Coventry Kid Jon Gaunt is bringing his one man show 'Live and Undaunted' to Bedworth on Friday 22nd February and the final show on 7th June at The Belgrade Theatre.

Jon is one that, so far, is undaunted and unimpressed by ladies football and his flyers suggest that you can 'ask any questions you like'. So what about it mums, and girls!?

14 January 2008 - Dele makes the first team
Adele Rogers made her first team debut coming off the bench to face local rivals Leafield Athletic. Her career stats so far make impressive reading: two shot on goal, two saves! 'Dele' first joined the club as a nine year old and has a promising future in the seniors. Well done Dele!

Picture above are three representatives from this club supporting a breast cancer walk whist on a recent holiday. The three recently took a cruise on the Carnival Liberty. During the cruise an event called 'On Deck for a Cure' was held to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation. Over 320 took part and the picture shows the three from the club along with the ships captain Carlo Queirolo (he is the one in the shades) after completion of the walk. Coventry City Ladies star in a unique and empowering new coaching book, Coaching The Coach: A complete guide how to coach soccer skills through drills, written by our very own CCLFC Centre of Excellence goalkeeping coach, Richard Seedhouse.

Coventry City Girls U16’s and all of the goalkeepers at the COE appear in a number of photographs within the book demonstrating their various skills as they road tested a number of the drills. Page from the book

Richard said, “The book is written in a completely unique question and answer style, which inspires the coach to think. It asks who they are coaching, what drill can be used and why. It looks at what actually needs to be coached and the different coaching styles. This book is not a traditional simple book full of drills or coaching points. It is a book that gently, through the chapters, guides our new Level 1 coaches. Taking them from supervisor of players and drills on their journey to Level 2 coach and educator of players, even helping them onward toward their UEFA B qualification. Coaching The Coach is the only practical guide, which shows how to use drills as the tool to coach players”

Terry Harvey the U16’s coach and a holder of the UEFA B Coaching Certificate proof read the book and stated, "Whenever we take on any new Level 1 coach I will make sure they know about this book and recommend they read it"

David Busst who is a UEFA A Licence coach and Coventry City FC football coaching in the community manager commented, "I have read many coaching manuals which show how to set up, organise and the key points to look for. CCFC are currently running the 2007/2008 Sky Blue Soccerette Competition. The Development's Open age squad are being represented by Jessica Flint.

The final ten will then be featured in the festive match-day programme and each finalist will be featured individually during the second half of the season, before the winner is crowned Sky Blue Socerette 2007/08 at the Club's End of Season Awards Diner.

On behalf of CCLFC we'd like to thank Joe Elliott for his tireless efforts in saving Coventry City Football Club from administration. Joe's 'beloved club' will now go from strength to strength and we all look forward to investment to take us back into the Premiership. We look forward to building a relationship with Ray Ranson and his SISU consortium over the coming weeks and months.

8 December 2007 - 1st Team County Cup ~ change of venue
Due to water-logging at Westwood Heath, the Ladies' re-arranged County Cup fixture v Stratford Town will now take place on the all-weather facility at Myton School, Warwick. Kick off is at 13:00.

Take A46 south from Coventry, exit A429 (to Warwick), then A425 (Banbury Road), take 1st left (Myton/Leamington) after crossing River Avon, Myton School approx ½ mile on right.

1 December 2007 - FA Cup News ~ The Lincoln view
The Lady Imps take a break from the pressures of the League this weekend and enter the FA Women's Cup arena for the first time this season on Sunday when travel to Midlands Combination outfit Coventry.

Lincoln are stepping into the competition at the 3rd round stage, when all Northern and Southern Division club's of the Women's Premier League enter the fray.

Coventry, who presently sit third in the Midland Women's Combination League - one division below Lincoln - won their right to play the Lady Imps by defeating Derby County 2-1 at home on 11th November.

"This is going to be a tricky encounter for us," admitted Lady Imps chairman Geoff Adams. "Coventry are going great guns in their League at the moment, sitting in third place only eight points from the top with a game in hand, in what is a division filled with very good sides. We have a couple of niggling injuries in the squad at the moment, so we will be giving those a week off, but other than that Lincoln City Ladies will be taking absolutely no chances with Coventry. I fully expect this to be a tough encounter, and manager Rod Wilson will take no chances with the side we travel with - we will be fielding our strongest team, without exception! Yes I expect Lincoln to win, but like all FA Cup matches, it isn't going to be easy" he said.

24 November 2007 - 1st Team ~ change to scheduled fixture
The Ladies 1st team fixture has been reversed due to fixture congestion following last week’s postponed County Cup fixture, the League game this Sunday takes place at Alfreton’s Impact Arena, North Street, Alfreton. Kick off is at 14:00.

From M1: Turn off at junction 28 onto the A38 towards Derby. Follow for 2 miles then take the slip road onto the B600. Turn right at main road towards the town centre. After ½ mile turn left into North Street. The Ground is 200 yards down on the right.

19 November 2007 - New Approved McDonalds T-Shirts
CCLFC would like to thank McDonalds (Lucy & Alisn) at Alvis Retail Park Coventry for supporting our club once again by supplying polo shirts for out U19 & U16 squads for match days and their relevant tours in 2008.

Pictured wearing the new approved shirts are players from the U16s Centre Of Excellence squad who also presented Ronald McDonalds Housing Care with a cheque for £203.00. raised from a bag pack earlier in the season. RMHC is a charity which provides comfortable housing and care for parents of children in hospital often for specialist treatment many miles away from home. A new RMHC project is due to open early next year in the Walsgrave area so this donation is a good example of money raised within the community for the community.

17 November 2007 - A New Club for City
Over the last few years these great football clubs have dominated girls and ladies football in the City and also in the FA County Leagues. Over the summer two of our home grown players have been called into the International squad and over the last twelve months the first team have gained great recognition with two Ricoh appearances playing in front of 7,500 spectators.

Coventry City Ladies have embraced the FA’s principles for a Centre of Excellence with a non-competitive style and smaller squad sizes. Whilst Coventry City Girls have continued to develop in line with the traditions of competitive football in the FA County Leagues collecting numerous honours along the way.

As the two wings of the club have evolved so have the requirements of both sides and therefore with this in mind, and to ensure player progression to senior football, exciting changes will be made for the 2008/2009 season.

With effect from 07-08 season, Coventry City Ladies FC will develop an Academy to run alongside the CoE and Ladies and the Development Club will form an independent club known as City of Coventry Girls FC with a new identity. This is an exciting time for all involved as the City will benefit from a new girls football club and more girls will have the opportunity to play football in an environment of their choice.

Over the coming months, City of Coventry Girls FC website will be developed and launched but in the mean time, no changes will be apparent. Both clubs will commence with the new structure from the beginning of the season. City of Coventry Girls FC will be affiliated to Coventry City Ladies and the Centre of Excellence and players will be encouraged to join either club as to their playing ability.

17 November 2007 - FA Cup Round 3
Coventry City Ladies host Lincoln in Round 3 of the FA Cup on Sunday 2nd Dec.

Last year we were able to play the fixture at The Ricoh, but unfortunately Coventry are at home to Sheffield United the previous day and it would be impossible for the staff to recover the pitch on time.

The task ahead for Stuart and Neil is to prepare the team for the game and we can be sure they will be very focused, fit and ready! Our job is to turn up in numbers and cheer the team on in huge numbers. Over 1,200 watched City take on Wolves last year, how about we get half that!!! Please spread the word and sing up for the Sky Blue Ladies!

12 November 2007 - FA Goalkeeping DVD Star
Developing the Player: The 4 Corner Approach

Coventry City Ladies U12's COE Goalkeeper was over the moon at being asked to take part in the latest FA coaching DVD. She attended a Goalkeeper coaching session led by Andy Poole the FA Regional Coach Development Manager and UEFA A Licence coach.

She seized her opportunity by showing off her goalkeeping skills in front of the cameras, which resulted in a 15 minute session included in the new DVD. The session centred on Goalkeeper coaching and player development and can be found under the technical defending section on disc 2 of this great new coaching tool.

Andy Poole explained, “The DVD is called “ Developing the Player: The 4 Corner Approach” and is produced by the FA as a candidate resource for the 'new' format of the Level 2 Coaching Certificate “L2CCF”. The DVD highlights the structure and strategy for maintaining a player centred approach to coaching”

Richard Seedhouse, Coventry City 's own Goalkeeping coach said, “this was a great opportunity, there are not many people who can say they have appeared in an FA coaching DVD and she should be very proud of herself”

The new 2 disc DVD illustrates throughout, the practical ideas that will help support the coach in their coaching. It has been developed to introduce coaches to the principle of The FA 4-corner Player Development Model.

9 November 2007 - Coventry Stadium (Greyhound Racing) Thanks to CCFC
All the staff at Coventry Stadium (Greyhound Racing) have extended their thanks and appreciation to CCLFC for our support on their first blue square finals night. Organized at short notice 49 players and parents braved a chilly damp night to have a great evening away from football with one or two bets being placed.

The S Crew enjoyed themselves and took centre stage at one point dancing and cheering with Sky TV Cameras directed on them. (Better stick to football girls). With the younger players in the spot light one or two of the older players tried muscling in only to be disappointed after queuing for ages to be told that it was only the dogs that were racing that could have individual photos before each race.

In view of our support Coventry Stadium have already mentioned the possability of future nights out (discounted of course).

4 November 2007 - Welcome

Coventry City Girls Development Club wishes to welcome their new head coach.

AJ (full name Amanda Jane Payne) comes to us from West Bromwich Albion as a level 2 coach, working towards completing her level 3. AJ has already worked with a couple of squads and has received positive feedback from her efforts. Ajay will continue to work with Managers and Coaches at all age groups, guiding us through the season. The Club sees this signing as a positive way forward.

2 November 2007 - Another Thank You
Thanks have to go to Claire's Accessories U.S.A. for the 160 hair bands they sent us free of charge. There generosity was very much appreciated as this helps in the education of getting the girls to understand the rules about wearing material hairbands.

2 November 2007 - England Under 17's Progress
A squad of 18 of the very best young players including CCLFC's Jade Formaston have successfully qualified for the next stage of the Under 17's European Championships. Three wins from 3 matches have ensured that England are in the hat for the next round with the draw taking place in Switzerland in early December. The victories were as follows (hosts) Georgia 0 v 13 England , Slovakia 1 v 3 England and Russia 0 v 1 England . Formo played in 2 of the 3 matches firstly against Georgia and then for the 2nd 45 minutes versus Russia in what was to prove to be the decisive game.

Congratulations to head coach Lois Fidler and all the girls who represented their country on this great occasion.

For all those young ladies who are interested in playing football or who already are, Jade has proved that by being totally dedicated and working extremely hard that your dreams can come true..
